New Market cookbook launched to coincide with British Food Fortnight

September 16, 2021

A new cookbook packed with recipes from Barnsley’s market traders and restauranteurs has been launched to coincide with the culmination of The Glass Works redevelopment and British Food Fortnight.

‘Barnsley Larder’ features 26 mouth-watering recipes, which includes the famous Barnsley Chop as well as international dishes such as Greek Pork Gyros and Thai Prawn Tom Yum Soup.

Vendors from Market Kitchen – Barnsley town centre’s acclaimed independent food hall and bar, traders from Barnsley Markets and several local restauranteurs and chefs have shared some of their favourite recipes for the book, as well as helpful hints and tips about sourcing fresh ingredients and food preparation.

The cookbook was launched with help from Market Kitchen vendors, who held cooking demonstrations in the market’s atrium in the run up to British Food Fortnight, which begins on Saturday 25 September.

The Market Oven demonstrated their Onion Bread recipe, Dolly’s Desserts made Rocky Road Cookie Dough and Jar Bar made Pork Gyros, Cevapi and Lepinje.

Throughout autumn, there will be lots of activities and live demonstrations in Barnsley Markets to mark the phased opening of The Glass Works, which includes a number of highly anticipated bars and restaurants. The new public square, alongside new stores for TK Maxx, Next and Sports Direct, was unveiled to the public last week.

Recipe cards and demonstration videos are available via Barnsley Markets’ social media channels and visitors are being encouraged to try and recreate the dishes at home using the local produce available from the stalls.

Those who post photos of their creations on social media and tag @BarnsleyMarkets will receive a free copy of the ‘Barnsley Larder’ when they show their post to a member of the Markets Team in the market between Wednesday 29 September and Saturday 2 October.

Alternatively, you can register with the Mi Rewards loyalty-based scheme during September to receive a free copy of the cookbook.

Mi Rewards enables customers to gain points when they shop at registered businesses. They are then entered into prize draws based on the number of points they have collected. Members of the public can receive their free copy of the cookbook by showing proof of their account to a member of the Markets Team, again between Wednesday 29 September and Saturday 2 October.

On Wednesday 29 September, local poet and author Ian MacMillan will be giving a short talk about the cookbook and signing copies of the ‘Barnsley Larder’ for members of the public who have signed up for Mi Rewards. There will be a member of staff on site to help customers sign up for the scheme if they haven’t done so already.

During Good Food Fortnight, Mi Rewards-members will be able to collect double-point promotions through the scheme. Each weekday (excluding Sunday) will have a theme, and when customers shop at the businesses associated with that theme on that day, they will receive double points with Mi Rewards.

The themes are Meat-Free Monday, Treat-Yourself Tuesday, Heart-Warming Wednesday, Meat-Feast Thursday, Fish-Supper Friday and Savoury Saturday.

Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture at Barnsley Council, said: “There are now more reasons than ever to visit Barnsley.

“The Glass Works is open and the famous Barnsley Markets is a hive of activity. There’s something for everyone and during September and October there’s a real focus on celebrating locally-sourced food, regional recipes and great home cooking.

“‘Barnsley Larder’ is a super book packed full of tasty recipes and great tips. It’s the perfect accompaniment to shopping in Barnsley Markets.”
