September 14, 2024 - September 14, 2024

JOIN US FOR THE BARNSLEY GARDEN PARTY – A DAY OF ART, PERFORMANCE AND CELEBRATION!

The Glass Works are thrilled to bring back the Barnsley Garden Party on Saturday, 14th September, from 11 am to 4 pm. This vibrant festival will transform Barnsley town centre into a hub of creativity, with spectacular music, dance, circus acts, and family-friendly performances that promise to enchant visitors of all ages. Set in the lively Glass Works Square and the beautifully restored Barnsley Civic, this event is the perfect way to experience the very best of outdoor arts.

Prepare to be amazed as some of the UK’s leading street artists and performers take over The Glass Works. Highlights include WILD, an awe-inspiring dance, acrobatics, and circus performance that delves into our relationship with nature, and Look Mum, No Hands, a touching coming-of-age story told through physical theatre. Don’t miss Serving Sounds, a multi-sensory sound installation where you can feel the beat instead of sipping a drink, and make sure to stop by the Library @ the Lightbox for eco-crafts, face painting, and more family fun throughout the day.

The Barnsley Garden Party is not just a celebration of the arts but also a significant moment for the town. It coincides with the grand reopening of Barnsley Civic’s iconic Eldon Street entrance, restored to its former glory after being closed for over two decades. Originally built in 1877, this historic entrance now stands as a symbol of Barnsley’s rich cultural heritage and continued commitment to the arts.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a day filled with creativity, history, and community spirit. The Barnsley Garden Party is part of the Without Walls network, which brings innovative outdoor arts to towns and cities across England. Join us and be part of a spectacular day that celebrates the best of Barnsley’s culture!

THE FULL LST OF PERFORMERS INCLUDES:

WILD by Motionhouse: WILD combines dance, acrobatics and circus in a gravity-defying exploration of our relationship with the natural environment. Taking place in a forest of tall poles the performers look down onto the forest floor… where a dangerous world of unknown meetings lies beneath. 12.15pm and 3.15pm (45 mins)

Look Mum, No Hands by Daryl & Co: Look Mum, No Hands! is a tender tale of friendship and growing up. It explores a coming-of-age story about two friends testing their own boundaries. We see the two friends play, gently pushing the boundaries of what is possible, until together they find the perfect balance of each of their limits. 1pm and 2.45pm (35 mins)

BEES! The Colony by Artzani: Wander amongst the honey-perfumed Bee Colony, finding a variety of ways of viewing and interacting with the contents of 6 impossible Bee Hives. In each there is a surprising conceptual twist, which challenges, charms and confounds expectations. 11.30am-1pm and 2pm-3.30pm

Serving Sounds by Working Boys Club: Serving Sounds is a multi-sensory sound installation that creates connection through music – a bar that serves bass rather than beer! Create a groove, strings and guitar sounds from glasses, beermats and the odd bit of change. 11am, 1pm and 2.30pm (45 mins)

Global Grooves: Be inspired by tribal beats and contemporary grooves from around the world with the Global Grooves junk jam band. Meet and dance with beautiful Sofiya – the Ukranian Carnival Queen bringing love, light and friendship. 11.45am and 2.15pm (30 mins)

The Story Shell by Barnsley Libraries: Enter the Story Shell’s magical world of stories and creativity within this unique outdoor arts space. An inclusive pop-up storytelling space by artists Suzie Devey with Steve Messam. 11.15am, 1.30pm and 3pm (30 mins)

Pulse of Barnsley by Radi8Arts: Witness the joys and challenges of an 1980s mining family in Barnsley, celebrating their strong bonds and reflecting on how Barnsley’s transformation has shaped the town’s societal landscape today. A new dance commission featuring local secondary schoolchildren for the Fusion Festival of Joy. 11.30am and 2pm (15 mins).

Secret Garden in The Lightbox: Drop in to the Library @ the Lightbox for a host of exciting eco-crafts throughout the day, from flower weaving to mini beast making, face painting and more. 11am to 3.30pm.
