July 26, 2022

A new star has arrived in Barnsley. Cineworld, the nation’s leading cinema chain, has announced that Cineworld Barnsley will open its doors to the public on 23rd September 2022.

The new cinema, located in The Glass Works, will feature 13 state-of-the-art screens including an IMAX® with Laser auditorium, a multi-sensory 4DX extreme cinema experience and ScreenX, which is a 270-degree wrap-around screen that surrounds you in your seat. The cinema will also include an onsite Starbucks.

Cineworld Barnsley will be based at The Glass Works complex in the heart of the town centre, and will serve as a gathering place for the local community to drink coffee and watch the stars on the big screen.

Alongside the Starbucks cafe, Cineworld concessions will offer a wide variety of snack favourites,  including Rollover hot dogs, Candyking pick & mix and ICEE frozen drinks. The cinema will open in time for the highly anticipated re-release of Avatar (available in IMAX and 4DX), followed by blockbusters Black Adam and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Tickets are set to go on sale soon at www.cineworld.com.

To prepare for the opening, Cineworld Barnsley is on a major recruitment drive and is inviting prospective employees to join them on July 30th at Oakwell, Barnsley FC Stadium, for an open day to apply to a number of roles at the new cinema. There are a variety of positions available including Cineworld Team Member roles, as well as Starbucks Barista roles. All roles are on either a part or full-time basis. Potential applicants are encouraged to visit https://cineworld.com/careers for more details.

Oli Cattanach, Cineworld Barnsley’s General Manager, commented: “We can’t wait to bring the magic of cinema to Barnsley, a town which is famous for its cultural legacy and its profound appreciation for the arts. This next-generation cinema will serve as a cultural hub, offering the local community the very best place to watch a movie and more, with a brand new Starbucks located on the ground floor entrance. We’re looking for stars to join our team, so if you want to be part of this journey, come along to our open day. We look forward to introducing ourselves to the proud community of Barnsley and welcoming them through our doors in September.

Sir Steve Houghton, CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council, said: “The addition of Cineworld completes the high-quality leisure offer we have created in The Glass Works, complemented by exciting new places to eat, drink, shop and relax. A major ambition of The Glass Works was to help us diversify the town centre offer and attract some of the very best high street brands. We are delighted and proud to have seen this really take shape over the last 12 months, with the likes of The Botanist, Fridays, Coffee Boy, Nando’s, TK Maxx, Next, River Island, Flannels, and a great number of independents all locating in Barnsley. This is the culmination of lots of hard work by Council teams and our many partners and is a really exciting time for Barnsley town centre.”

About the new cinema

Only available at Cineworld, 4DX offers customers the opportunity to experience the latest movies with high-tech motion seats, engineered to work in perfect synchronicity with the action on screen. Movie fans will be surrounded by special effects such as wind, water, fog, lightning, snow, bubbles and scents. Available in both 2D and 3D formats, 4DX is one of the biggest innovations in cinematic technology. The new 4DX auditorium will house 144 specially designed seats.

ScreenX is a state-of-the-art technology, which uses up to twelve additional projectors to extend the film out onto the side walls of the auditorium, for a truly atmospheric experience that surrounds you in your seat. With the film extended beyond your peripheral vision, ScreenX is a mesmerizing 270-degree experience that will surround you in your seat. Along with 4DX, ScreenX is only available at Cineworld.

The IMAX auditorium will feature the ground-breaking experience, IMAX® with Laser, which delivers stunning images and powerful, immersive audio to transport audiences into blockbuster films like never before. The experience is set apart by its next-generation dual 4K laser projection system which features a new optical engine and a suite of proprietary IMAX technologies that delivers 100% greater brightness and five times more contrast compared to industry norms, displaying the most distinct, exotic colours ever available on-screen. This new experience also features IMAX’s exclusive 12-channel sound technology with new side and overhead channels added to deliver greater dynamic range and precision with more sound than ever before.
