Barnsley Market Awarded British Food in the Community Runner-Up

October 25, 2021

Our very own beloved and historic Barnsley Market has been awarded an amazing second place in the prestigious British Food in the Community by the Love British Food organisation – Congratulations!

The award was created by Love British Food to celebrate the very best community food hubs who promote British produce so shoppers can discover the delights of the diverse and delicious food produced in Great Britain.

Barnsley has always been proud of its culinary traditions, and the Barnsley Market has been a key driver of those traditions for over 800 years! The recent re-housing of the Market as part of The Glass Works development has brought the spirit of the Market to a whole new generation and inspired brilliant new developments such as the Market Kitchen!

Market Kitchen is a vibrant and exciting food hall and bar serving a range of local and international dishes from all over the world! Located above the Barnsley Market, it is home to the popular Cucina Sky Lounge, Dolly’s Deserts, Meze Kitchen and more! More information can be found here.

Barnsley Market was commended for the fantastic events that they organised during British Food Fortnight, which ran from 18th September until the 3rd October 2021.

The Market hosted themed days to promote different kinds of food and to highlight the diverse British food offering they have to offer. Meat-Free Mondays, Treat-Yourself Tuesdays, Heart-Warming Wednesdays, Meat-Feast Thursdays, Fish-Supper Fridays, and Savoury Saturdays were a huge hit with customers and created a great buzz around the market.

Another brilliant highlight of the fortnight, was the unmissable live cooking demos that were hosted to promote the brand new ‘Barnsley Larder’ cookbook, which was launched on Thursday 9th September and features fantastic local recipes from local businesses. The demos were ran by the fantastic chefs from Market Kitchen, who also provided the 26 recipes in the cookbook! Find out all about ‘Barnsley Larder’ Here.

Legendary local author and poet Ian McMillan, the Bard of Barnsley, provided the foreword to the book, and visited Barnsley Market on release day where he signed a number of copies.

The award was jointly won by Bartholomew Secondary School from Eynsham, West Oxfordshire and the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. Congratulations to them on their fantastic work!

With over 100 market stalls, the amazing and historic Barnsley Market has everything you could need from fresh food to furniture, cards and gifts to health and beauty. Check out all the brilliant offerings here!
