The Glass Works – the flagship leisure and retail development currently transforming Barnsley town centre, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Regeneration award at the Planning Awards 2021.
The Planning Awards are one of the most coveted and respected awards within the property industry and reward excellence in professional planning work, placemaking, urban design, economic development and regeneration.
Matthew Gladstone, Executive Director of Place at Barnsley Council said:
“We are delighted and proud to learn that The Glass Works has been nominated for a Planning award this year.
“We have remained dedicated and committed to the regeneration of the town centre and are looking forward to its completion later this year.
“The Glass Works will be the new beating heart of Barnsley and supports our vision to create a more dynamic, safe, inclusive and welcoming family first town centre, and be a great place to live, learn and do business.
“The benefits to the community are huge and the positive impact of our new assets, such as Barnsley Markets, Market Kitchen and Library @ the Lightbox, are clear to see. It has provided the town with an unmistakable sense of confidence and is also helping to drive other improvements across the town centre, including the Eldon Street High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) project.”
The news comes on the back of another exciting leasing signing last week, with Barnsley Council and development partner Queensberry announcing that Flannels will open an 11,000 sq. ft store within The Glass Works. The luxury fashion brand will join NEXT, Sports Direct, TK Maxx, JD Sports and Deichmann as key retailers when it opens later this year.
Set for completion later this year, the final phase of The Glass Works programme includes a 13-screen Cineworld and Superbowl UK bowling venue, alongside popular new family restaurants like Nando’s.
The winner of the Regeneration award will be revealed during the Planning Awards 2021 virtual ceremony on the 9th and 10th June.
