WATCH THE KINGS CORONATION LIVE IN THE GLASS WORKS SQUARE WITH OUR GIANT SCREEN!

April 25, 2023

With less than two weeks to go until the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort, we’re busy putting together the finishing touches to our coronation event in the town centre, which will feature a large screen to live stream the coronation, enabling us to celebrate the historical moment together.

The free, one-day event will take place in Barnsley’s Glass Works square between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 6 May 2023. As well as the big screen, the event will feature a whole programme of entertainment, performances, and activities for all the family to enjoy.

We’re delighted to be able to share full detail of what’s in store throughout the day:

BIG SCREEN CELEBRATIONS

Take a seat, sit back, and enjoy a picnic whilst watching the coronation on our big screen outside Library @ the Lightbox in Glass Works Square. We’re one of 35 UK locations to secure funding through the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the UK Government to feature a screen to show live coverage of the traditional ceremony.

We will also be screening the spectacular Coronation Concert on Sunday 7 May taking place in the grounds of Windsor Castle. The Concert’s ‘ world-class line up’ includes Take That, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, amongst many more.

While picnics are encouraged, bringing or drinking your own alcohol won’t be permitted. If you’d like to enjoy a drink whilst enjoying the celebrations, please make use of our fantastic local bars and restaurants that have outdoor seating around the Glass Works square, including Falco Lounge, The Salt House, Fridays and The Botanist.

MEET OUR KINGLY BEAST

Meet our new super-sized willow sculpture in honour of King Charles. The new sculpture will be none other than Charles the T-Rex dinosaur – a nod to the monarch’s new cypher which includes CR III, where ‘C’ is for Charles and ‘R’ is for Rex.

ENTERTAINMENT AND PERFORMANCES

Enjoy performances from Folk Dance Remixed – a unique, feel-good fusion of traditional folk and street dance styles around a maypole, wearing a crown for the occasion. You’ll even have the chance to give it a go at one of their workshops.

See Barnsley’s very own English sword dancing team, Barnsley Longsword, perform. Interestingly, sword fighting was banned under Oliver Cromwell but revived by King Charles II.

Watch the magical WilderNests family show in the Library @ the Lightbox. Linking in with King Charles’s passion for wildlife, this unique show by HandMade Theatre will encourage us to explore the plants, insects and animals around us in a fun and exciting way.

GET CORONATION CREATIVE

Make your own willow crown to take home with willow artist Maggie Cooper and take part in themed land art activities with artist James Brunt.

Take a seat and a selfie in the ‘Coronation Throne’ decorated with colourful pom poms by local community crafts group Yarn in Tarn and children from Worsbrough Common Primary School.

Why not make a day of it and enjoy all that our vibrant town centre has to offer? From culture to shopping, food to entertainment – there’s something for everyone.
